Complete DLT registration checklist for SMS in India. Entity registration, sender ID approval, template submission, and consent management.
DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) registration is mandatory for sending commercial SMS in India as per TRAI regulations. Every business must register as a Principal Entity on a DLT platform (Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, or BSNL), register sender IDs (headers), get message templates approved, and maintain customer consent records. This checklist covers the entire process.
Select your DLT platform: Jio (Vilpower), Airtel (Airtel DLT), Vodafone Idea (Vi DLT), or BSNL. Each platform charges a one-time registration fee.
Gather: Company PAN card, GST certificate, Certificate of Incorporation, authorised signatory's Aadhaar/PAN, Letter of Authorisation, and company letterhead.
Create an account on your chosen DLT platform. Submit company documents and pay the registration fee (typically Rs 5,900 + GST). Approval takes 3-7 business days.
Once approved, you receive a unique Entity ID (PE ID). This ID is required for all subsequent registrations.
Register your sender IDs (headers) — the 6-character alphanumeric name displayed to recipients (e.g., LDGSTY). You can register multiple headers for different purposes.
Transactional: For OTPs, order updates, account alerts. Promotional: For marketing offers and campaigns. Service Implicit: For service messages to existing customers.
Header approval takes 1-3 business days. Ensure the header is unique and doesn't conflict with existing registrations.
Register every SMS template you plan to use. Include fixed text and variable placeholders ({#var#}). Each template needs a unique name.Transactional: OTP, alerts, updates (sent 24/7). Promotional: Marketing messages (sent 9 AM–9 PM). Service Implicit: Existing customer service messages (sent 24/7).
Submit templates on the DLT platform. Approval takes 1-7 days. Rejected templates can be modified and resubmitted.
Maintain consent records for all recipients. Consent can be collected via website forms, WhatsApp opt-in, written forms, or IVR.
Upload consent records to the DLT platform for promotional messaging. Include consent date, source, and expiry.
Honour opt-out requests within 7 days. Maintain a suppression list. Lodgestory handles this automatically via the SMS channel settings.

What teams ask before they use this template.
Yes. TRAI mandates DLT registration for all commercial SMS — transactional, promotional, and service messages. Non-compliance results in blocked messages.
Entity registration takes 3-7 days. Header registration takes 1-3 days. Template approval takes 1-7 days. Total process is typically 2-3 weeks.
Yes, but it's not recommended. Register on one platform and your templates are accessible via inter-operability across all operators.
You can modify the template and resubmit. Common rejection reasons: promotional content in transactional templates, missing variables, or prohibited content.
Lodgestory validates DLT template IDs before sending SMS. If a message doesn't match a registered template, it's blocked with an error notification.
